  This season we read and hear a barrage of press stories about Oklahoma's budget shortfall due to falling oil prices. The legislature is looking for ways to make ends meet including cuts to existing programs that benefit people in need. Just this past week we learned of a shortfall in the state's share of the Medicaid program for the indigent. There is a big smoked pig in our state that should be carved up to take care of some immediate needs. The legislature merely needs to approve a proposed state question that could be placed on the November ballot.

OKC resident: There’s someone smoking a cigarette in Bluff Creek Park! 

911: We’ll get a squad car out there right away.

  This may sound silly, but if Oklahoma CIty Ward 4 Councilman Pete White has his way, this could happen - calling the cops to stop a smoker in a public park! On December 8, Councilman White will propose an new ordinance for Oklahoma City making it illegal to smoke tobacco on all city property, including parks! Councilman White makes an exception for city golf courses and sidewalks. The reason for the exemption on golf courses is golfers tend to be affluent and prefer cigars. And sidewalks will be exempt as it’s difficult to enforce for sidewalks.

  This is what America has come to - banning smoking outdoors as well as indoors? Can Councilman White explain to me or anyone the dangers of secondhand smoke in the open air? Of course he cannot because he has no evidence. Councilman White just doesn’t like smoking and he’s using his petty post to promote his agenda. Ward 2 Councilman Ed Shadid doesn’t think White’s proposal goes far enough, he wants it extended to golf courses but White believes these regulations must be made, “a step at a time.” Source The Oklahoman, November 24, 2015

  A mere 20 years ago any public official proposing a ban on tobacco use outdoors would be laughed at and not by Big Tobacco; they’d be laughed at by any sane citizen. But America has lost her way and her mind in so many different ways.

Costello Rejected By Fallin

  Governor Mary Fallin appointed Melissa McLawhorn Houston, who had been in the state attorney general's office, as the labor commissioner for the remainder of the term of Mark Costello, whose life was cut short on August 23, when his wayward, troubled son knifed him to death outside a restaurant in Oklahoma City.  Fallin made the appointment on November 10, which would have been Mark Costello's 60th birthday.  Her appointment of Houston was not a happy, postmortem birthday present for his widow, Cathy, who had asked for Fallin for the appointment.  A governor's appointing the surviving spouce of an officeholder to hold the office for the remaining duration of the decedent's term is a time-honored, respectful tradition.  Governor Fallin didn't honor that tradition.  I think I know why.

Under Arnett's Skin

First David Arnett lied to me now he lies about me.

In the spirit of kicking a man when he’s down, David Arnett wrote a recent attack on Randy Brogdon after Brogdon stepped down as Republican state chairman. 

Then he wrote about me, “Beginning with his assumed Republican credentials...”

A few points:

•  I DID run for public office as a Republican in 1988 when I was 20. I was the only candidate representing the Republican party in Rogers County that year.
• I DID work at the Republican National Committee on Capitol Hill during the summer of 1994.
• And I HAVE worked on over 100 campaigns for Republicans over a period of 30 years.

  Assumed Republican credentials? That’s really pretty sad David, but you do like to bend the truth don’t you?  He even took a swipe at KFAQ radio. Perhaps this is due to the fact his name and website are never mentioned there.

  But here’s where I am personally compelled to respond to David Arnett’s libel: He wrote, “King still attacks this publisher because I fired him.” David Arnett did not fire me but he did lie to me about the story he wanted me to write on the state superintendent’s race. Please see my July 15 story about David Arnett here on Sooner Politics especially the part about David’s December 2014 phone call to me. He didn’t fire me, quite the contrary.
